Congratulations to BCA Debate Team for placing as semi-finalists in the GISA State Debate Tournament.
We are pleased to announce two of our eighth grade students, Aaron Gano and Jacob Ruhkamp, placed as semi-finalists and received speaker awards at the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) State Debate Tournament at Mercer University in Macon, GA.
The students were seeking to gain a learning experience from participating in the state tournament, but walked away placing in the top 4 debate teams in the state, losing only to the 1st place team during semi-final rounds. Additionally, Jacob won 4th place state Speaker Award and Aaron won 5th place state Speaker Award.
We are proud of these students and their efforts in academic competition. Way to go to BCA’s first Debate Team!
BCA Students Head to GISA States in Debate
We are pleased to announce two of our eighth grade students, Aaron Gano and Jacob Ruhkamp, have qualified for the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) State Tournament at Mercer University.
Even though Aaron and Jacob are classified as novices, since this is their first year debating; they will be competing against high school JV and Varsity teams. Public Forum, also called Crossfire Debate, is when two teams comprised of two students per team, debate controversial topics. According to the National Forensics League, “Public Forum tests skills in argumentation, cross-examination, and refutation.”
The topic they will be debating is Resolved: Direct popular vote should replace electoral vote in presidential elections. This couldn’t be a better topic, since we are in the midst of our primary elections.
Mrs. Saliba, the team’s coach/sponsor said, “I knew that Aaron and Jacob would be successful debaters; their work ethic, knowledge of current events, and speaking skills would prepare them for this competitive event.”
The team will compete in their first state-wide tournament this Saturday, January 14. We are proud of these students and look forward to an exciting weekend filled with unique opportunities only experienced in academic competition.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SPELLING BEE CONTESTANTS!
